Guthuk Puja

Guthuk Puja in the UK Sherpa community is a traditional pre–New Year ritual observed on the 29th day of the lunar month, focusing on cleansing negativity from the past year and welcoming renewal. Families gather to eat guthuk, a special nine-ingredient soup containing small dough balls with symbolic items inside, which are revealed after the meal in a light-hearted way to encourage reflection and laughter. The evening often includes simple prayers or a short puja to symbolically remove misfortune and bad energy, adapted to home or community settings in the UK. For Sherpas living in the UK, Guthuk Puja is both a spiritual practice and an important way to preserve cultural identity, pass traditions to younger generations, and strengthen family and community bonds.
